Index of Genesis passages
The following list shows the seventy-six passages into which I have divided Genesis, together with a number and a short informal title for each passage, followed by the chapter and verse reference. There is also a link (labelled "TEXT") to the NBIE* rendering of those passages for which there is one (only twenty passages have been so rendered at this time). The passages listed in italics are genealogical sections known as tol'dot; the others are narrative passages proper. See here for my justification for this division into passages and an explanation of how it relates to the conventional chapter division. Another list of the narrative passages with a synopsis of the plot content of each such passage may be found here. The passages are grouped into twelve convenient sections which are here indicated by pseudo-Mayan numerals (from • to ••//). I believe these sections make sense for literary purposes, and they also correspond exactly to the traditional weekly portions used in Jewish Torah readings. The passages, in their sections, are also grouped here into five suggested cycles, labelled by Roman numerals and capitalized headings. None of these groupings is in any way "obligatory", they are just suggestions which I believe help to make the reading of Genesis more meaningful and approachable; nothing essential hinges on them, any more than it does on the traditional chapter and verse divisions of bibles, which merely serve a reference purpose; none of these was part of the original text of Genesis.
*Note: NBIE is short for "Nawat Bible in English". The passages that have been so rendered are only provisional, rough English translations of the corresponding passages in the Nawat draft translation of Genesis, which can be viewed in its entirety here. This rough draft is going to be revised later in the light of the notes that I am currently compiling and which will be posted on The Genesis Blog in the coming weeks.
